The year 2018 saw the inception of the National Youth Movement Against Tuberculosis (Nymat) Nepal mobilizing young people to champion Tuberculosis (TB) awareness and advocacy. Since its inception, promoting youth volunteerism for TB control has been central to all Nymat initiatives. Emerging as a grassroots youth organization, Nymat embarked on a dialogue with young people, community leaders, and stakeholders at all levels of Nepal to define the role of youth in combating TB.
These dialogues reached public forums, educational institutions, and social clubs, gaining momentum, and attracting the attention of thousands of young Nepalese. Subsequently, in 2019, the WHO 1+1 Youth Initiative's launch underscored youth's pivotal role in global TB control efforts. Nymat started implementing the principles of the 1+1 initiative in its outreach activities. Physical and virtual meetings, workshops, and consultations were organized to educate youth about TB issues and actively involve them in local and provincial health systems. The young TB advocates then contributed by conducting research, providing support to patients and survivors, and implementing innovative initiatives.
March 2022 was a milestone as Nymat Nepal officially registered as a youth-led non-governmental organization (NGO). The organization adopted the WHO's 1+1 Youth Initiative and Youth in TB Agenda into its constitution. Led by youth from various corners of Nepal, Nymat forged a network spanning all seven provinces of the country. Currently, the organization is led by 13 board members, a provincial leadership team for the movement in all 7 provinces, and a network of over 2000 youth throughout the country. Beyond borders, the movement extended to young health and medical professionals in high TB-burden countries like India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Kenya, Nigeria, and the Philippines, recognizing similar TB challenges and the need for a unified global response. Nymat strives to expand its network globally to implement the 1+1 initiative and promote the #Youth2EndTB agenda.
